It won't help you find a fox, but it's fun. ![]() ![]() ![]() Pin in the Sky is by all accounts a debut, but it sure doesn’t feel that way. Far more common, then, are the books that look funny and then, when you least expect it, hit you in the gut with – BAM! – Pathos!! It’s not a bad way to go about things, if the writing can pull off the switch. The publishing world of the early 21st century has little tolerance for meaningless whimsy. I have a grudging respect for these books, since I think it’s a lot harder to get them published in today’s market. It can be simply amusing for the sake of amusement, making no attempt at being meaningful in any way. Now a hilarious novel for children can go one of two ways. I’m not avoiding the serious stuff, but through a series of unlikely events I found myself diving deep into funny book after funny book. Though I didn’t quite mean to, I ended up reading a whole slew of middle grade novels that were funny. ![]() This year, I stumbled into an unexpected pattern. This is the conflict at the heart of Senlin Ascends -a story about a timid school teacher who must transform himself into something entirely new if he ever hopes to see his wife again.įrom the very first few pages of this book, one can immediately see the love and care that went into its conception. Have you ever lost someone in a crowded place? Ever experienced that feeling of despair and worry when you couldn’t immediately spot them? He may also have been unaware that he was making snap judgements or assumptions since Henry did not look or behave exactly like a pastor is generallye expected to, it was hard for Mitch to trust that he was one. He also had trouble wholly believing in him because he was aware of his criminal past and thought that he must be playing some kind of "angle", possibly keeping donations, or operating a criminal activity behind the facade of the church. Mitch was initially suspicious of Henry because he seemed to be doing too much good for those around him, and to be content with absolutely no financial reward for it whatsoever.
